I see that you might have found a poor connection, this could surely give a poor response to the command to fire the plug.
4 was weak, so the crank took too long to get to the position to fire 1, this set the misfire code. A misfire is determined because when 4 fires, 1 does not fire within the specified (calculated) time because 4 fired weakly. If you are cruising along at a steady speed, then the time from firing 4 to firing 1 should be a steady time, if the throttle is open (you're speeding up) then the time from 4 to 1 should be getting progressively shorter. Given a firing order of 153624 (15 is too young, 36 is too old, 24 is just right), when 4 fires, then 1 should fire next within a certain period of time that is calculated on current speed and throttle opening. If the problem remains on the original cylinder, then you are looking at a fuel injector issue, or an internal issue with the engine, or you have trouble in the wire harness that goes to the coils.Ī misfire means that the Expected Work Was Not Performed. If the problem stays then the coil is the problem, if it moves then it follows the boot, and the boot is the problem. If the problem moves then you have a bad coil or boot. If you are having a single cylinder misfire, then swap one coil and its boot (the part that does the job of the spark plug wire if the engine was not coil-on-plug) with one other coil and boot. Will see if the issue stays away, but I put about 20 minutes drive on the car and have had no stumbling since. Figured I had tried everything else, and sure enough this solved it. If anyone has any thoughts, I would appreciate the help.Įdit: Spent the whole day on this and ended up finding a random forum post of someone who said they had the same issue, tried everything and ended up slightly tightening the pins in the connector to make better contact with the coil. Battery in this car is of unknown age, I have seen some reference that this can cause misfires, but I have no other electrical symptoms. Still no dice, misfire is persistent on cylinder 4.
